Meet the Player: Richard Pingitor

Alex Bothwell interviews player Richard Pingitor.

Our BaseABLE players are thrilled that baseball is back – especially for them. The pandemic has been hard on many and especially some of our athletes. It is great to be back on the diamond doing what we love.

And today Alex Bothwell talks with BaseABLE player, Richard Pingitor, who plays catcher and looks forward to baseball being part of the Special Olympics soon.

We love Richard’s enthusiasm and his wonderful spirit!

Here’s a sneak peek into their chat:

Alex Bothwell: When did you start playing baseball?

Rich Pingitor: I did Little League, I played somewhat for my high school. And that was a great time. I’ve been always like a catcher and one of the leaders on the field. That’s what I try to see myself as when I’m playing the game.

Alex Bothwell: Why do you love baseball so much?

Rich Pingitor: It’s the game. It’s being as one as a team. I can see when somebody’s down on themselves, I let them blow off their steam — but then I go talk to them. Baseball is in my blood somewhat. It’s always all about strategy and I like to be in that kind of role. Playing the game and having fun is what it’s all about!

Alex Bothwell: What would it mean to you if baseball got into the Special Olympics?

Rich Pingitor: It would mean a lot to me. I’m not getting any younger either! We would love to get baseball into the Special Olympics so all of the young, deserving athletes can play. We are diehard about the game and want to share that and give everyone options.

Alex Bothwell: Is there anything else you want to share?

Rich Pingitor: We just want to try to get the game to [more] people in New Jersey and other states. And yes, it’s hard for people who are handicapped. I understand it’s a hard game to learn for mentally challenged people, but it can also be a lot of fun. My mom was a big advocate for me learning baseball when I was younger. She coached and made sure I understood the game. I also want to thank Coach Tony for all that he has done for the team and the sport.
